Today in 1972 the 44th annual Academy Awards were handed out celebrating 1971 in film. The ceremony was noted for the special Oscar given to Charlie Chaplin, who returned to the US after 20 years of self imposed exile in Switzerland.

The winners that year included Best Picture "The French Connection" starring Best Actor winner Gene Hackman and also won Best Director for William Friedkin
Best Actress went to Jane Fonda for "Klute" and "The Last Picture Show" took home Best Support Actor honors for Ben Johnson and Best Supporting Actress for Cloris Leachman.
