I was watching TV waiting for the evening news to begin but a still ad for HOGAN'S HEROES reruns stayed up for nearly five minutes. Finally it cut to a solemn shot of George's dad, Nick Clooney (then the local anchor) and he didn't speak for long seconds. Finally he said, "Elvis Presley...is dead." Then they cut away.
Years later, I asked him about that and he said that he was sitting there waiting to go on when he was handed a bulletin with the news and it floored him. Said he wasn't sure, even after decades of live TV, that he could go on at first, but he did.
