As you probably know from reading this or even knowing me, I love reading, talking and listening to the #1 songs off of Billboards Hot 100. Especially from the 1970s.
Well here are a couple of videos for 2 songs that everyone knows but will rarely admit they like:

#1 in 1979, it was the last song to top the charts in the 1970s: Rupert Holmes "Escape" better known as "The Pina Colada song":



And this one was #1 in January 1974,"Baby Come Back" by Player. It broke up the monopoly the Bee Gees had at that moment. It sandwiched 2 weeks at #1 between "How Deep is Your Love" and "Stayin Alive". The great trivia for this song and group is that the bass player Ron Moss(wearing a red outfit in the video) became more famous in the 1990s for playing Ridge on the CBS soap opera "the Bold and the Beautiful".

Lets talk music

Well lets see I was listening to UltimateOldiesradio.com on monday and this weeks top 40 Cashbox countdown was from Oct 5th 1968. Lets look at the TOP 11 songs 40 years ago:

Now that is a TOP 11! Just about everything in this one and at the top the #1 Beatles song in their incredible recording career, which is saying something when you think about all the songs they have recorded. Next week I week have the next Cashbox countdown. I am sure the Billboard was pretty much the same and Hey Jude ruled the airwaves that fall on any chart that you could find.
Now for an interesting look at Billboard history, at their website they are celebrating 50years of the Hot 100 singles chart. They have all kinds of charts and my favorite is the countdown of the Top 100 songs in chart history and they included when possible the video. Good stuff and I wont spoil it by telling you the #1 song...hint: its not Elvis or the Beatles (killed any guess you had didnt I).

New arrival at the Completeist Library

Well I had a productive week of book buying. I bought one off of ebay and another came from Book of the Month Club 2, formerly Zooba and another I found at the Atlanta Earth Festival's book sale.

The Beatles Anthology I purchased off of ebay for 10 plus S/H which wasnt even half of the new price I found everywhere else. Awesome book, weighs 7 lbs and is so full of stuff it will make your head spin.

The George Burns book I purchased for a dollar at the Atlanta New Earth festival and I will be reading it shortly. Looks like a very good follow up to his bestseller Gracie.

Then I got "Rome 1960" from my bookclub for 9.95 as my monthly selection. Read the excerpt in Sports Illustrated and it read wonderful.

A side note about the Atlanta Festival, I passed up a chance to purchase quite a few classic albums from a yard sale..these included "The Red Album" by the Beatles, "Moody Blue" by Elvis, several Three Dog Night disc and many others. I did buy at my daughter's recommendation the soundtrack to "HELP" by the Beatles. She has a shirt like that and wha the heck it is a pure classic LP. Oh and 4 classic KISS albums, oh well, live and learn. I will need the money for living if things keep going the way they are for much longer.

R.I.P. Paul Newman

If you want a great and funny Paul Newman movie, then you need to see "Slapshot"

I fell in love with this movie before I fell in love with hockey and now its a ritual of fall, winter, spring, summer...heck anytime to watch this. You have to watch like the Rocky Horror picture show and say the lines right along with them or you are not a fan.
This is another great clip from "Slap Shot". If you dont laugh then go to a game, then come home and watch it again.

Tv Favorites

Well some of my favorite shows have premiered with their new season and so far they are worth the wait. Family Guy however is close to jumping the shark, it needs less Seth McFarland singing and more just plain funny stuff. The new season got off to a rocky start lastnight but by the end it had some laugh out loud jokes and references so I will continue. The Simpsons however may be on its last legs. They have in my own view gone past the much watch stage into "its still on?" area. I hope they can recapture some of the glory they have lost over the last 5 years.
"The Big Bang Theory" on CBS should be up for best comedy at the Emmys next year. It is one of the funniest and smartest shows on tv. It doesnt talk down to you it just assumes you are that smart and get the jokes and references. I love that idea, much like "Fraiser" was for most of its run.
Let me know what you like or dont like in the new tv year.

R.I.P Killer Kowalski, Jerry Reed and Don Lafontaine

It has been a weekend of sad departures. The passing of wrestling legend Walter "Killer" Kowalski on Saturday then the loss of voiceover legend Don LaFontaine today and in between the passing of country legend Jerry Reed.

after summerslam

A couple of pictures from the after the show ended as they were tearing it all down.
The people that had seats on the floor ringside got to keep their special painted chairs. We stayed and watched as guys tried to sneak down and walk off with ones that were left behind by some folks who didnt realize you could keep them. Well the security at the fieldhouse was smartly checking tickets to match people to seat numbers so no one got down there to get one that didnt pay for it. One guy waited until almost everyone was gone and still tried to claim since no one took it he should be able too. Didnt work. It was fun but I am glad I didnt buy the ppv..being there in person was a great show but watching at home probably saw a terrible show.

SummerSlam

Yes I am wrestling fan and earlier this month, thanks to a really good friend I attended the 2008 edition of WWE SummerSlam. It was at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis this year. It was a tremendous live event, however my friend and I have discovered that we are no longer the demographic that the WWE is looking for in their audience. It was all geared to the kids (who LOVED the show) in the crowd. From the reaction of the kids all around us it was a success, however the in ring product for us old school types was waaay below par.

Well its been almost a month again since I posted. Well I have a lot of good stuff to post now.
First let me say screw all you democrats I like the pick for John McCain's running mate. I now will actuall vote for him. I think Obama/OBinden will be a disaster for the country. Debate me all you want I am not backing down. I think OBiden is a good choice if you want to lose, they want CHANGE and a NEW DIRECTION...well lets pick a senator who has been inside the beltway for 30 years and wouldnt know change if it sat on his lap.
So there you have my political thoughs. Oh yeah Michael Moore is stupid bitch.

well I went the rest of July with nothing. Well If you read the news today you could see all the depressing events. The killing of a bus passenger in Candada to a Louisana boy who got his arm bitten off by an alligator while swimming in a lake...where they knew alligators were! BRILLIANT!
anyway this doesnt do the movie justice...there is a better trailer out there but this was what I could find on youtube...do a good search to find the other one, its worth it. Its the new movie with Toby Keith and Rodney Carrington called "Beer for My Horses"
