Today, July 7th, is the birthday of Joey Scarbury, known for his August 1981 hit song "Believe it or Not, Theme from "The Greatest American Hero". The song was much more popular than the show even though the show was fun and was a new take on the superhero genre.
The song had the misfortune of being in the top 5 the same time as "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield and "Endless Love" by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross. Both of those smash hits stayed a combined 11 weeks at #1. "Believe it or Not" peaked at #2 behind "Endless Love" the week of August 15th and stayed there 2 weeks before beginning a slow fall out of the top 40.
Now on with the Countdown!
