Ninja Warrior

I found this show on the G4 network last summer when they ran a marathon of episodes, its called Ninja Warrior. People come from all walks of life to try and conquer the course. Very few make it past stage 1 and fewer past stage 2 and only 3 won gotten past all 3 stages to win. Its like a serious version of Wipeout (another great show). Here are so great wipeouts from Ninja Warrior.

#1 Song of the Week

This week lets listen to the King of RockNRoll, Elvis Presley from 1958 and his 10th #1 single "Hard Headed Woman". This was from the soundtrack to his movie "King Creole" All of the songs for the soundtrack were recorded in January of that year and when this one hit number one the week of July 21st, Elvis was in Ft Hood, Texas for Army basic training. "Hard Headed Woman" spent 2 weeks at #1. This would be the last we would see Elvis at the top for a year when a song he recorded while on furlough,"Big Hunk O'Love", would top the charts.
I couldnt find a performance of this song but here is montage of photos with the song

and here is the trailer for "King Creole" probably one his best movies and Elvis' favorite of all his films.

Family Guy updated from Comic-Con

We didnt get the "Empire Strikes Back" parody from "Family Guy" yet this season but maybe this upcoming season will be different. Here is an update.

I just got the last season from "Family Guy" on DVD from Netflix and the blurb on the dvd sleeve mentions that the disc contains the "ESB" paroday, so these were printed before the season and weren't corrected in time.

#1 Song of the Week

40 years ago today man walked on the moon and set the whole world alight with thoughts of fantastic space flight to other worlds and the great future that lie ahead. In a coincedence of a sort the number one song at the time was "In The Year 2525" by Zager and Evans. Denny Zager and Rick Evans hailed from the great plains of Nebraska and this would be their only hit record and one they tried to move away from over the years. This was not "their sound" according to Rick Evans in Billboard magazine in 1969 so they never recaptured the popularity this song brought them during the week of the moon walk.

Museum Part 4

This is the championship belt worn during the NWA World title reign of Lou Thesz in the 1940s and 50s

Below are 2 pictures of the death mask of 30s wrestler Maurice Tillet, who was known as "The French Angel" during his heyday. This mask is one of 3 in existance and was donated to the museum. I included a picture of Mikayla next to it to show the size of his head due to acromegaly, a disese that enlarges and disfigures the human body. It also lead to the death of Andre the Giant. Here is a picture of Maurice Tillet in everday life.

Museum Part 3

Below is the original mask and ring jacket for pro legend Mr Wrestling I. He made his name in the southern wrestling circut and became an pop culture icon when he was named the favorite wrestler of President Jimmy Carter's mother Lillian.

One of the original Million Dollar Belts used by Ted Dibiase during his time as "The Million Dollar Man" in the 1980s WWF.

Of course they had several walls dedicated to Dan Gable who is THE MAN in Iowa wrestling.

One of Bret Hart's ring jackets that he wore during his reign as WWF Champion. This one had the gold buttons removed for security reasons because you can just reach up and touch this display.

These are the AWA World tag team belts first worn by the Road Warriors in the late 80s and then by Curt Henning/Scott Hall, the Midnight Rockers during the Tag Team boom in the AWA.

Museum Part 2

The first picture is a picture of the damage caused by the flood of the the Iowa River in 2008. The museum was closed until June of 2009 and most of the damage was done by the sewers backing up into the building. They had sandbagged and stopped most of the river from causing the damage.
this is my lovely daughter Mikayla doing her best impression of Baron Von Raschke. I call her the Baroness after this was taken.

Because Frank Gotch was from Iowa and considered one of, if not THE wrestling legend in wrestling crazy Iowa, they devoted an entire wall to his life and career and I am sure there is more they dont have on display but this was pretty impressive.

The have a small ring in the middle of the room and anyone can get in and roll around. My daughters did of course so I had my picture taken with them, I of course couldnt get in through the ropes so I just stood on the apron.

My Trip to the Wrestling Museum

My family and I stopped at the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum in Waterloo Iowa on July 3rd. Here are some of the pictures from that stop.
Above are the pictures of the museum itself and just inside is a painting of a young Abe Lincoln wrestling and they down the hall from that is the "wing" dedicated to pro wrestling.

Final thought on the MJ memorial

Why do I get the feeling he wasnt even in the casket they brought out and secondly I want to be soft and say what a touching moment when his daughter said her final words but part of me thinks the family made sure that one of the kids said this to show the world how great a father he was so when the custody hearing starts (if Ms. Rowe wants the fight) they have visual evidence and the world on their side. You know the service became a sideshow with the appearance of Al Sharpton, anything he is involved in is suspect and this was no different.
I wonder if the family was so security sensitive that they have already buried him today at a private service and just had another cheaper casket (made to look expensive for tv) at the memorial.
Just my own thoughts. I dont want to offend or upset anyone who reads this that was a MJ fan but you know how weird they all have been over the years.

#2 Song of the Week

Today, July 7th, is the birthday of Joey Scarbury, known for his August 1981 hit song "Believe it or Not, Theme from "The Greatest American Hero". The song was much more popular than the show even though the show was fun and was a new take on the superhero genre.
The song had the misfortune of being in the top 5 the same time as "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield and "Endless Love" by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross. Both of those smash hits stayed a combined 11 weeks at #1. "Believe it or Not" peaked at #2 behind "Endless Love" the week of August 15th and stayed there 2 weeks before beginning a slow fall out of the top 40.
Now on with the Countdown!

the video posted of this "live" performace is from the tv show Solid Gold. Enjoy the nostaglic/kistch value of this 10 min excerpt.

MJ memorial

trying to watch the MJ memorial is like watching a slow motion train wreck. Its sad and compelling at the same time. I would hazazrd a guess that if there was 24 hours news coverage in 1977 they would have done this for Elvis, but the 3 networks covering this is almost unprecedented for a celebrity. I have seen this for funerals of Reagan and Ford and somewhat for Nixon but I am amazed at how they are using this to prop up their ratings. Can't wait to see the casket and if they open it for the memorial.
