Roger Maris of the NY Yankees was chasing Babe Ruth's record of 61 home runs in a season.
He had won the American League MVP in 1960 and would win it again in 1961 as he set the new single season home run record with 61. Maris along with teammates Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford would power the Yankees to the 1961 World Series championship defeating the Cincinnati Reds 4 games to 1.
