Dan Blocker (Hoss Cartwright)

May 13th 1972

The world lost one its gentle giants in Dan Blocker, known to the world as Hoss Cartwright, died suddenly after gall bladder surgery.

An tremendously kind man, Dan would endear himself to millions over multiple generations in Bonanza, seen in reruns 40 years after his untimely passing.

US Army General Douglas MacArthur address' the United States Congress in a farewell speech, as he was ending a 52 years of military service.

He would, during this speech, gives his famous statement 

"Old soldiers never die, they just fade away"

Aloha from Hawaii: Via Satellite

Today in 1973 - Elvis Presley drew the largest audience for a single TV show to that time -- an estimated one billion viewers in 40 countries. Elvis - Aloha From Hawaii, a live, worldwide concert from Honolulu International Center Arena (later known as the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Arena). Performed at 12:30 a.m. Hawaiian Time, it was beamed live via Globecam Satellite to Australia, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, South Vietnam and other countries, and was seen on a delayed basis in approximately 30 European countries. The first American airing was April 4th on NBC-TV. The show was also released as a two-record album, and became one of Elvis’s top-selling LPs

This was the last soundtrack (and last #1 album on the Billboard 200 for Elvis) released during Elvis lifetime, the last 2 were released after his death, Elvis in Concert (1977 TV Special) and This is Elvis in 1981.

1968 Oscar Winners

Tonight in 1969 was a night of firsts at the 41st Annual Academy Awards ceremony.
For the first time, the happenings at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles were beamed to TV audiences worldwide. Appropriately, a foreign (British) film was honored as Best Picture: Oliver! (John Woolf, producer), which also won for Best Director (Carol Reed); Best Art Direction/Set Decoration (John Box, Terence Marsh, Vernon Dixon, Ken Muggleston); Best Sound (Shepperton SSD); Best Music/Score of a Musical Picture/Original or Adaptation (Johnny Green). And, for the first time, there was a tie for Best Actress. Barbra Streisand picked up her statuette for her starring role in Funny Girl, and for the second year in a row, Katharine Hepburn was honored as Best Actress, this time for her performance in The Lion in Winter.
Other veteran actors received their first Oscars this night: Cliff Robertson for his Best Actor role in Charly; Jack Albertson for his Best Supporting Actor role in The Subject Was Roses and Ruth Gordon for her Best Supporting Actress role in Rosemary’s Baby.
Even the Best Music/Song award was presented for the first time to Michel Legrand (music) and Alan and Marilyn Bergman (lyrics) for the song The Windmills of Your Mind from the The Thomas Crown Affair. Other great 1968 films that were Oscar-winners or nominees: 2001: A Space Odyssey; Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; For Love of Ivy; Planet of the Apes; Bullitt; The Odd Couple; Romeo and Juliet; The Producers; Rachel, Rachel.
