Ralph Sampson
In 1981, 1982 and 1983 Ralph Sampson of the University of Virginia won the Adolph Rupp Award, Oscar Robertson Award and The Naismith Award as college basketball's player of the year.
In 1982 and 1983 he also included The John Wooden Award as player of the year. The Sporting News picked him as Player of the Year in 1982
In his freshman year he led the Virginia Cavaliers to the 1980 NIT Championship and in 1981 he took them to the NCAA Final Four.

The Trailer Park
This week we go to the trailer park to mark the 27th anniversary of the opening day of
"Return of the Jedi".
This was the 3rd in the Star Wars Trilogy released between 1977 and 1983. This would set the record for opening day box office with $6,219,629.00 and eventually grossing over $475 million dollars world wide and is currently the 83rd biggest movie of all time. With the inflation ajusted totals it ranks 15th alltime with $474,772,300 and only 3 spots behind "The Empire Strikes Back".

Goodbye, Farewell & Amen
Today in 1983 CBS aired the finale to one of the best shows ever on television, M*A*S*H.
The final episode was a 2 1/2 hour "movie" of the final days of the Korean War for the members of the 4077th MASH, Hawkeye, BJ, Col Potter, Maj Margaret Houlihan, Cpl Klinger, Maj Charles Emerson Winchester III, Father Mulcahey and all the others that made this one of the best shows ever.
First airing in 1972 and barely surviving its low ratings (thanks to a more patient CBS) it developed some of the most memorable characters, episodes and dialogue on tv.
The tv show followed the popular film of the same name but only one actor stayed with the show from the movie, Gary Burghoff as Cpl Walter "Radar" O'Reilly.
Thanks to syndication and airing on TVLand and Hallmark channel as well as the complete series on DVD new generations can discover what great tv is like.
My daughters have watched with me since they were old enough to understand what they were watching and they enjoy it just as much as I do.

Top of the Pops!
This weeks Top of The Pops! is goes back to this week in 1983 and it would be one of the only times that a super duo of Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney did not see the top spot together.
Lets get started.
#5 - Africa - Toto
This group may have been named after a famous movie dog but there was no doubt about their success as this song proved. On the way to the top they make a quick stop this week at #5.
#4 - Sexual Healing - Marvin Gaye
Here is the comeback smash for Motown legend Marvin Gaye. This would peak #3 and would also spend 10 weeks at the top of the Soul chart making it the longest running #1 on the that chart for the 1980s. Sadly this would his last hit song as he would die tragically in 1984.
#3 - Dirty Laundry - Don Henley
Peaking this week in the 3rd spot is the Eagles drummer/lead singer with his first solo hit.
#2 - The Girl is Mine - Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney
The first single off of the now legendary "Thiller" album. It wasnt liked by the critics but the fans loved it enough to send it to the #2 spot and go platinum. It was the song that dethroned Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" on the Soul/R&B chart after 10 weeks.
#1 - Down Under - Men At Work
In its second of 4 weeks as the biggest single in the US, this was the second #1 hit for the Australian group Men at Work. This was a big week for the group as they had the biggest single in the US and UK as well as the #1 album (Business As Usual) in the US and UK. This had not happened since 1980 when Barbara Streisand had the big four spots.
Men At Work would go on to win the Grammy for Best New Artist of 1983.

Billboard #1 Song of the Week
This week our #1 song is "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler. This went to #1 October 1st 1983 and stayed there for 4 consecutive weeks.
This was a song written by super producer/writer Jim Steinman. He had the idea for this song as part of a theme for a musical he was writing called Small Circle of Friends but it never got off the drawing board. He wrote "Eclipse" and the song "Faster Than the Speed of Night" out of the remains of that musical.
Steinman put together an all star band for the recording of "Eclipse" that included Max Weinberg of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and legendary Edgar Winter guitarist and vocalist Rick Derringer. He added Rory Dodd as the backing vocalist for "turn around....", Rory had sang backup on Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell" album so he was a favorite of Steinman.
"Total Eclipse of the Heart" also went #1 in the U.K. and Bonnie Tyler was the first female to have an album , Faster Than the Speed of Night, debut at the top of the U.K. album charts.
After recording "Eclipse" and before Columbia records decided to release the song, Bonnie was asked to record "Holding Out For A Hero" for the soundtrack to Footloose. "Hero" was another Jim Steinman song it would crack the top 40 in 1985.
