Old Time Radio Show of the Week

Our show this week is "Suspense" and its to celebrate what would have been the 94th birthday of a radio legend, William Conrad.  Famous for being Marshall Matt Dillon on the radio version of "Gunsmoke" during its entire run from 1952 to 1960.  He was also know for being in almost every dramatic show on radio at some point, the narrator of "Escape", roles in "X Minus One", etc., he narrated this classic episode :

Old Time Radio Show of the Week

This week's show is probably my favorite old time radio show not called Gunsmoke,
"The Jack Benny Program" which starred of course, Jack Benny.  Jack was a comedy and radio legend and transitioned to television with no problem and deftly took his show with him and became a tv legend.
Jack along with his famous cast saw little change in lineup from his debut in 1932 to the final radio show in 1955.   He made household names out of his wife Mary Livingstone, announcer Don Wilson, singer Dennis Day and band leader Phil Harris.  In the early 1950s Phil Harris left Jack's show and was smoothly replaced by Bob Crosby (brother of Bing Crosby) and it was seamless.   Jack himself said that his role was to have a funny show and it didnt matter who got the laughs because it was always The Jack Benny Program the people remembered.

Old Time Radio Show of the Week

This week's show is the fantastic show "ESCAPE".  This show that had a different adventure or sci fi or horror or classic short story each week from July 1947 to September 1954.   Introduced each week by the rumbling voice of the legendary William Conrad, who sometimes starred in the story (like this week's) or just gave us the classic introduction starting with.."Are you tired of the everyday?....

Gunsmoke on Radio - The Debut

April 26th 1952 CBS radio debuted a new "adult western" for its radio audiences.  Starring radio veteran William Conrad as Marshall Matt Dillon, this Norm MacDonnell and John Meston creation was aimed at a more adult audience instead of a fast action shoot'em up like Gene Autry, The Lone Ranger or Cisco Kid.   This was an almost true to life depiction of the old west with all its grit, grime and death.  Known for not usually a happy ending that had kids cheering, the end was one could have expected to have actually happened in the life of Marshall Dillon in a wild town of Dodge City, Kansas.

The last great drama in the golden age of radio, Gunsmoke would be on the air until 1960, but by then radio was an antiquated form of entertainment and television and Gunsmoke's own version on television had become a huge success.  Still consider by many old time radio enthusiast and experts as the best drama radio produced it to this day remains a popular choice on social media sites old time radio.
