From March 5th 1966,"The Ballad of the Green Berets" by SSGT Barry Sadler. It spent 5weeks on the top of the Billboard Hot 100 just before the escalation of the Vietnam War that would really outmode this type of patriotic hero songs.
Now lets step back a few months to Sept of 1965 to the complete antithesis of the first song, "Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire. It spent one week at #1 wedged between the Beatles "Help!" and The McCoys "Hang on Sloopy".
